Data loss prevention (DLP)

This is a set of tools and processes designed to prevent sensitive data from being lost, misused or accessed by unauthorized people.

DLP solutions classify regulated, confidential, and business-critical data and identify policy violations by organizations, often due to regulatory requirements such as HIPAA, PCI -DSS, or GDPR and its counterpart in our country, the KVKK.

Once these violations are identified, DLP applies remediation with warnings, encryption, and other protections to prevent end users from inadvertently or maliciously sharing data that could put the company at risk. Data loss prevention software and tools monitor and control endpoint activity, filter data flow across enterprise networks, and monitor data in the environment to protect data at rest, in transit, and in use. DLP also provides reports to meet compliance and audit requirements and identify areas for forensics and incident response, vulnerabilities and anomalies.

Data Loss Prevention solves three main objectives that are common pain points for many organizations: Personal Data Protection/Compliance, Intellectual Property (IP) Protection, and Data Visibility.

Protection/Compliance of Personal Information:
Does your company collect and store personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI) or payment card data (PCI)?

If so, you are most likely subject to compliance regulations such as HIPAA (for PHI) and GDPR (for EU citizens’ personal data) that require you to protect your customers’ sensitive data. DLP can identify, classify, and tag sensitive data and monitor the events and incidents surrounding that data. In addition, reporting capabilities provide the details required for compliance audits.

Intellectual Property (IP) Protection:

Are there important intellectual property and trade or state secrets that could jeopardize your company’s financial health and brand image if lost or stolen?

DLP solutions, such as Digital Guardian, which use context-based classification, can classify intellectual property in both structured and unstructured formats. With policies and controls in place, you can protect this data from unwanted intrusion.

Data Visibility:

Does your organization want to gain additional visibility into data movement?

A comprehensive enterprise DLP solution can help you see and track your data across endpoints, networks, and the cloud. This gives you visibility into how individual users in your organization interact with data.
