DESKTOP VIRTUALIZATION

Client virtualization is a virtualization technology used to separate the end-user desktop environment from the physical environment. In other words, desktop virtualization virtualises desktop computers and provides desktop environments to users on the network.

Traditional desktop infrastructures have certain difficulties. These difficulties are grouped under four main headings as shown in the picture. They are diverse and listed as updates, backup, application sharing, the difficulty of central management, 7×24 survivability and security.

Desktop virtualization comes to our rescue here. It provides convenience on central management, business continuity, desktop location-independent access, and data security.

There are three types of client virtualization.

  • VDI
  • RDS
  • DaaS

VDI technologies consist of client machines in the datacenter. Users experience the desktops over the network or through a remote connection. While virtualized desktops share the same resources (CPU, memory, GPU, disk), each virtual client is isolated from the others.

RDS provides remote desktop access through the Windows server. Applications and desktop information are accessed via RDP. It is offered at a lower price compared to VDI. However, the system is not isolated as users use it from a fully shared source. If a problem occurs in the main source, it affects all users.

DaaS, Desktop As a Service, is a service that is delivered in the cloud. They are more flexible and faster to deploy than on-premise solutions. Also known as Cloud Desktop Virtualization. The disadvantage is that their features and configuration cannot always be customized as needed. The advantages of client virtualization can be enumerated as follows:

  • Ease of Management
  • Cost savings
  • Efficiency
  • Support for a wide variety of devices
  • Security
  • Agility and scalability
